KILLING COPS FOR KICKS

IRWIN KRAMER: Stealing cars, bombing buildings, and killing cops. Fun and games? Not in Washington State. Lawmakers were not playing games when they passed a law to ban cop-killer games. The state outlawed video games containing realistic depictions of aggressive conflict in which the player kills or injures a law enforcement officer.

IRWIN KRAMER: Rather than lay their weapons down, game dealers shot back with a lawsuit. They claim they had a constitutional right to make fun of killing cops. Would it be game over for game dealers? The judge would not pull the plug on cop-killer games. Even if he had, the state did not ban other violent video games, so kids could still use their computers to sharpen their shooting skills.

IRWIN KRAMER: Without proof that banning cop-killer games would really protect police, the court protected the right to freedom of expression instead.
